Generative Scribing

Visual practise that attends to the field of energy and the emerging potential of a system

“Generative Scribing” extends the range of the graphic facilitator/graphic recorder to attend within an entire ecosystem. A generative scribe will facilitate with particular attention to an emerging reality that is brought to life by, and for, the social field in which it’s created.

No picture exists outside a system context, and a systems’ comprehension of itself is incomplete without the reflective aid the picture – or other seeing device – offers.

“The key to generative scribing is sensing from the heart. It’s not circling or hovering over. It’s not counting the minutes until a person stops speaking and we can go home. It’s not staying comfortable with me-them. It’s not not caring.

It is piercing through to something essential. Seeing clearly without fear of the result or consequence of what comes forward. It requires trust in the complete blankness of things. It can only happen when the social body (a handful or thousands of people) is committed to being together in place and time—and across place and time—committed to joining in the absolute present moment. It’s groping in the dark to find threads of hope, and getting that out and up on a wall for others to see. It’s believing that anyone who witnesses the drawing is an active participant in its creation.

There is no “other.” There is a hand that holds a marker, that leans forward from the extended arm of an upright, physical body acting purely on behalf of the whole. I draw because we exist; I draw as a social act.”

  • Agenda

This training will focus on generative scribing as a visual practice that considers the energetic field surrounding the act of graphic recording. Generative scribes attend to an emerging future, while learning to “let go” of what no longer serves a current state, in order to “let come” an essential, new reality. This workshop will intentionally challenge a prevalent mental model that graphics support groups mainly by reflecting content; participants will stretch to understand themselves as dynamic, interdependent parts of the very systems for which they draw.

The program will orient around structures of time: over-time/chronological, in-time/snapshot, and right-time/intuitive. Within each structure, the group will explore a dominant framework that can inform their practice: Theory U as it relates to drawing over-time, conversational dynamics as it relates to drawing in-time, and containers and presencing as they relate to drawing in-time.
